Maria was born on October 16, 1890 in the central Italian village of Corinaldo. Her parents, Luigi and Assunta, were simple tenant farmers. Poverty and economic situations forced the Goretti’s to emigrate from Italy to the south of Rome: the Pontine Marshes. Gorettis moved into a home shared with the Serenellis.
Only two years after the family arrived, Maria’s father, Luigi died of a disease. Maria’s mother Assunta was left behind to care for her kids and assume the responsibilities of her husband’s work in the field. Maria took on many chores and cared for her young siblings. Maria practiced virtues, constant prayer life and encouraged her Mother.
Alessandro attempted sexual assaults on Maria, she resisted and refused to give in. One day, when Maria refused to give in, Alessandro became enraged. He stabbed Maria 14 times. Maria was taken to the local hospital.
Before passing away, she said “I forgive him, and I want him with me in heaven!” She died the following day.
Alessandro was sentenced for 30 years in prison. The first few years in prison he did not repent. He had a dream, Maria was carrying 14 lilies (one for each stab). This resulted in Alessandro’s conversion. After 27 years of serving in prison, he was released.
Alessandro first went to visit Maria’s mother, Assunta, and ask her forgiveness. Assunta forgave Alessandro. He later became a lay associate in a Capuchin Franciscan friary. He died there in 1970.
Maria was beatified in 1947 and canonized in 1950. Maria Goretti is the Patron Saint of forgiveness, chastity, teenage girls & youth. Her feast is on July 6th
