Day 14: Gentleness (fruit of the Holy Spirit)
Galatians 5:22-26 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”
From the life of the Saints: Saint Francis de Sales is known as the “saint of gentleness.” He struggled with anger and an explosive temperament and had to work hard at exercising gentle patience with himself and with others. He has said, “A spoonful of honey attracts more flies than a barrel full of vinegar.” In 1877, Pope Pius IX declared Saint Francis de Sales a Doctor of the Church, the “Doctor of Love”. Because of his meek and cheerful personality, he is known as “The Gentleman Saint”. He reached out to people with goodness and gentleness.
Saint Joseph is the epitome of gentleness. He spoke little, he listened, and he obeyed
the Lord.
Reflection: How can I grow in the virtue of gentleness? The Holy Spirit is depicted as a dove. If the Holy Spirit sat on my shoulder like a dove, how would I act so that I do not put him to flight?
Prayer: Lord Holy Spirit, you are the giver of the fruit of gentleness. I want to grow in gentleness like you, Lord. Help me for when I am weak, you are strong. Come into my heart Lord. Saint Francis de Sales, pray for me. Saint Joseph, pray for me. Lord Jesus, teach me to be gentle and humble of heart like you.
Scripture: “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and
you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:29
