Come Holy Spirit

Day 15: Self control (fruit of the Holy Spirit)

Proverbs 25:28 “A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.”

From the life of the Saints: Saint Ignatius of Loyola was a person with strong self-control. His secret was to pray to God for strength. Saint John Vianney wrote, “It is by resistance to temptations that we give God proofs of our love.” The Saints strove to learn balance, maturity, and self-control, in order to become docile to the Holy Spirit.

Reflection: How can I grow the fruit of self-control in my life? Fruit grows when the tree has deep roots which draw water for nourishment. Am I a tree planted by the waters of the Holy Spirit? Do I abide in the Lord, immersed in his Word. Does the Word of God guide my every action?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I can do nothing without you. Help me to abide in you and strengthen
myself in your Word, that in moments of weakness, your Word will give me courage and
the resilience to overcome temptation. May I always give you honor and glory in
everything I say and do.

Scripture: “…for God did not give us a spirit of timidity but a spirit of power and love and self-
control.” 2 Timothy 1:7
