Come Holy Spirit

Day 33: Gift of tongues

Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim

The Catholic Encyclopedia mentions that “In post-Biblical times St. Irenæus tells us that ‘many’ of his contemporaries were heard ‘speaking through the Spirit in all kinds (pantodapais) of tongues’ . St. Francis Xavier is said to have preached in tongues unknown to him and St. Vincent Ferrer while using his native tongue was understood in others.”

There are furthermore special graces, also called charisms after the Greek term used by St. Paul and meaning “favor,” “gratuitous gift,” “benefit.”Whatever their character – sometimes it is extraordinary, such as the gift of miracles or of tongues – charisms are oriented toward sanctifying grace and are intended for the common good of the Church. They are at the service of charity which builds up the Church. (Catechism of the Catholic Church 2003)

Have you prayed to the Holy Spirit to open your heart to His love, His presence and understanding of His gifts (including the gift of tongues) that build you and the church?

Prayer: Come Holy Spirit, fill me with Your love, help me to be open to You. Give me understanding O Holy Spirit, to know Your gifts, specially the gift of tongues. Abba, grant me fruit of the Holy Spirit and most importantly love and virtue of humility, graces and gifts I need to be rooted in You, and support the church, the body of Christ. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

Acts 10:45,46 The circumcised believers who had accompanied Peter were astounded that the gift of the holy Spirit should have been poured out on the Gentiles also, for they could hear them speaking in tongues and glorifying God.
