Come Holy Spirit

Day 47: Holy Spirit makes me a child of God

Romans 8:15  For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received a spirit of adoption, through which we cry, “Abba Father”

The Holy Spirit leads us like a mother. He leads His child by the hand…as a sighted person leads a blind person.” St. John Vianney

Just as a child is fully dependent on the parent, confidently resting in the parent’s arms, where all the  needs are taken care of,  we are called to live as a child of God.

Living as a child of God means trusting God is our Father and that God will provide for everything at the right time. We will have all the necessary strength, courage, wisdom and grace for every situation, every moment of our life.  As a child of God, we love the Father, and we obey all His commandments in love, and turn to the Father with all our heart. We live each day peacefully, depending on Him alone, fully abandoning and surrendering ourselves with total confidence to His holy will and perfect plan.

John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me

Children recognize their parent’s voice and do not follow the strangers, the same way as child of God we need to know our Father’s voice, listen to His word and follow Him.

Children lookup to their parents for guidance and follow their footsteps, and so we are called to turn to our Father for guidance,  follow and imitate Jesus.  We need to be right, just, loving and kind in our undertakings.

Children are pure of heart, quick to forgive and forget, and they are ready to ask for help. We can pray for help from God to help us  let-go of anger, resentment and bitterness and pray for strength to forgive others and remain pure as a child of God.

The Holy Spirit makes all of this possible and helps us  live as a child of God.

Come Holy Spirit, help me live as a child of God.

But let them rather understand that if they are the children of God, they are led by the Spirit of God Romans 8:14 to do that which should be done; and when they have done it, let them give thanks to Him by whom they act. For they are acted upon that they may act, not that they may themselves do nothing; and in addition to this, it is shown them what they ought to do, so that when they have done it as it ought to be done — that is, with the love and the delight of righteousness — they may rejoice in having received “the sweetness which the Lord has given, that their land should yield her increase.” But when they do not act, whether by not doing at all or by not doing from love, let them pray that what as yet they have not, they may receive. (St Augustine, On Rebuke & Grace)

Prayer: Breathe into me, Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy. Move in me, Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy. Attract my heart, Holy Spirit, that I may love only what is holy. Strengthen me, Holy Spirit, that I may defend all that is holy. Protect me, Holy Spirit, that I may always be holy. – St Augustine
