Word of God – prepare my heart and dwell in me

5) Purity of Heart & Clear Conscience follow the commandments in the Word of God

But for the searching and right understanding of the Scriptures there is need of a good life and a pure soul, and for Christian virtue to guide the mind to grasp, so far as human nature can, the truth concerning God the Word. One cannot possibly understand the teaching of the saints unless one has a pure mind and is trying to imitate their life.  (On the Incarnation of the Word, St Athanasius of Alexandria, Chapter 9)

When reading the Word of God, read it not as any other book, but pray and ask the Holy Spirit to open your heart, mind and understanding so the Word of God can take root in your inmost being and create a pure heart, fertile soil to allow His Word to grow in you.

Also, pray to the Holy Spirit to guard you from lies, disbelief in His Word, for Word of God is the truth. Only by the power of Holy Spirit can man by His grace and mercy alone follow the Lord fully and remain pure and pleasing to Him.  So ask the Holy Spirit, to help you remain faithful to His Word by His strength.

Read the Word of God in prayer and ask Lord for a pure heart, clear conscience by His grace. Only with a pure heart and clear conscience and openness to God’s word, we can follow His Word. Pray that we may stay true to His Word and not trade on His Word, nor deviate from the teachings of Christ.

Mathew 5:8 Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.

Psalm 51:10 A clean heart create for me, God; renew within me a steadfast spirit.

Similarly, anyone who wishes to understand the mind of the sacred writers must first cleanse his own life, and approach the saints by copying their deeds. Thus united to them in the fellowship of life, he will both understand the things revealed to them by God and, thenceforth escaping the peril that threatens sinners in the judgment, will receive that which is laid up for the saints in the kingdom of heaven. Of that reward it is written: “Eye hath not seen nor ear heard, neither hath entered into the heart of man the things that God has prepared”for them that live a godly life and love the God and Father in Christ Jesus our Lord, through Whom and with Whom be to the Father Himself, with the Son Himself, in the Holy Spirit, honor and might and glory to ages of ages. Amen.  (On the Incarnation of the Word, St Athanasius of Alexandria, Chapter 9)

First off, in faith believe in God’s word and His power at work in His word. Follow His Word, His commandments faithfully, Receive the sacraments of the church, confession and Communion regularly. Spend quiet time with the Word of God in adoration in the Blessed Sacrament.

With His mercy, His grace and His love all things are possible.

Abba, grant me a clean heart, and renew a steadfast Spirit within me to follow You faithfully according to Your Word. Please cleanse me, purify me by power of Your Holy Spirit and grant me a clear conscience so I may always be pleasing to you. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.
